Mindfulness

Holy Isle (sometimes called Holy Island) is a rock off Arran in the Firth of Clyde, about 1 kilometre long and 3 kilometres wide. In modern times, apart from providing some very rough grazing, its main purpose has been as a base for a lighthouse that warns ships off what otherwise would be a major hazard on the way to the Clyde estuary and the port of Glasgow. In ancient times, it was a site of pilgrimage, with a healing spring and a cave said to have been inhabited by the sixth-century monk Saint Molaise. In 1992, the owner, a pious Catholic, sold the island to Samye Ling below market price on the instructions of the Virgin Mary, who had told her she wanted it to be used for spiritual purposes. The lighthouse accommodation was renovated, and several ‘ecologically sensitive’ buildings added. Although Samye Ling uses it as a location for trainee monks and nuns to live in seclusion for three years, three months, and three days, the renovations have deliberately been austere and plain and, apart from a few stupas, eschew Samye Ling’s bling housestyle. A fund-raising flyer from the 1990s stresses the ecumenical nature of the retreat. In addition to housing long-term monastic retreats, the island would provide a place where ‘Buddhists, Christians and those of any faith may seek spiritual regeneration. Others might come simply for a period of quiet reflection.’31 A decade later that ‘quiet reflection’ had morphed into mindfulness. And, if Holy Island is a little too severe, you could get away from it all with ‘a walking and mindfulness’ holiday in Cumbria.

Your base is the Hassness Country House hotel on the shores of Lake Buttermere. There’s no phone signal or TV just fabulous views and plenty of Cumbrian hospitality. After a hearty cooked breakfast, you set off into the hills, breaking off for lunch at a local inn before returning to the hotel for dinner.32
